The Winter Solstice and an Event in 30 News

Today is "We Tripantu", or celebration of the Mapuche new year in my country, Chile. Today is the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere of the planet. Half the journey of our blue pearl around the sun. Today can be just a normal date, half of the year, and at the same time be a moment of reflection on the other half of 2024 that we have left to spend. Beyond the plans and desires of each person, there are a series of events that it is imperative for me to highlight, since they are not in the immediate vision of many and yet they are more important than it may seem. I mean that the daily news is not accounting for the greatest social, economic and political trend of recent decades. I am referring to the end of the dollar as a world reserve currency. I know that at first glance this topic doesn't seem like a big deal, let alone be so relevant to impact our lives or even reflect on it.  However this event has been at the center of my study for almost 15 years.  For year...

El Equinoccio de Invierno y un Evento en 30 Noticias

Imagen

The Arrival of the Economic Winter

The economy is a social phenomenon and as such maintains biases inherent to human nature. Nothing as human as the relationship we have with natural cycles that have always accompanied us. Cycles of sowing in autumn and harvesting in summer, cycles of cold that force us to take shelter and other warmer ones that encourage us to go out and explore the world. This is why I wrote this metaphorical exercise comparing the seasons of the year with the recent history of money, especially the North American dollar, the world's reserve currency. According to my analysis, we are currently living in the economic autumn, which began with the Subprime crisis of 2007-2008. The economic and geopolitical events taking place right now in the world indicate that the change of economic season towards winter will be faster and more convulsive than previous ones. To understand what we are talking about, I am going to define some moments that marked the past of our monetary system in the previous season...

La Llegada del Invierno Económico

Imagen

Weimar: Hyperinflated! 100 years later

In 2012 I wrote an article that followed the events that occurred after the Subprime crisis that ended the existence of several large banks in the United States, including the largest bankruptcy up to that time, that of Lehman Brothers investment bank. The point that was highlighted in that article (1) was the possible appearance of a phenomenon of rising prices of goods due to the excessive printing of paper money, as a response to the crisis by the central banks of the world, thus called quantitative easing. This expansion of the monetary base is literally the definition of inflation. A runaway inflation with exponential growth that, according to yours truly, could become a phenomenon of hyperinflation, as occurred in 1923 in Weimar Germany. The prediction I published did not come true, due in part to the fact that the world's central banks pulled all the tricks out of their magic hats, calming and managing (manipulating) the most important markets in the world until an apparent ...

Weimar: Hiperinflados! 100 Años Después

Imagen
